It’s mortifying that one of the most effective skincare ingredients is also one of the most misused.
Retinol, also called vitamin A₁, is found in food and used as a powerful topical serum in skincare.
When used correctly, ✔️Retinol can solve so many skin care concerns. It can effectively:
- Treat fine lines
- Smooth out skin texture
- Minimize pores
- Fade dark spots
- Fight Acne/Blackheads
- Boost collagen production and
- Even out skin tone
Naturally, we love it.
ARE YOU OVER 25 YEARS OLD?
We recommend starting a retinol routine for those for our patients older than 25. Cell turnover starts to slow down and collagen production begins to diminish in your late 20s … and only gets worse from there. 😩
KNOW THE RISKS
Retinol is an incredible ingredient, but it can also be a harsh one. It’s known to cause:
- Dryness and
(depending on the strength and how often it’s used)
Sufficient to say, for those with very sensitive skin, talk to your aesthetician or dermatologist before using retinol.
RETINOL THE RIGHT WAY
TAKE BABY STEPS
If you are using it for the first time, start with a low concentration of retinol (a serum under 1% is great for beginners).
Only apply it once per week for a couple of weeks and notice how your skin reacts to it. If your skin is tolerating it without the negative side effect, gradually increase use.
HOW TO APPLY
Retinol breaks down when exposed to the sun and can make your skin more photo-senstive, so it’s best to apply it at night.
Step 1. Double cleanse: Clean your skin thoroughly. Once to remove makeup and pollutants and another to remove any impurities and excess oil.
Step 2. Apply Retinol: Approx 3 times a week, depending on the strength and your skin’s reaction to it.
Step 3: Wait 20 minutes
Step 4: Night Moisturizer: A rich, moisturizing cream to combat the irritation that’s typical with an aggressive anti-aging retinol
Applying retinol after your serums or moisturizer could reduce its effectiveness (and that’s now what you’re going for, here!)
LITTLE BY LITTLE
Don’t waste product when you don’t have to! A small, pea-sized amount spread over the face is more than enough to get the job done.
A FEW GREAT COMBINATIONS
Retinol + Salicylic Acid = Increased cell turnover and fewer breakouts
Retinol (PM) + Vitamin C (AM) = Youthful, Vibrant skin
Retinol + Niacinamide = Strong, Healthy, Youthful Skin
GIVE IT TIME
The real benefits of retinol can take 3-6 months to be seen. Keep going! Continue using retinol to maintain your results, and always protect your skin with a quality SPF while undertaking this powerful treatment.
