Botox vs. Dysport – Which Is Better?

Botox and Dysport are both popular aesthetic treatments that work by temporarily easing the movement of muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines. If you are interested in injectables like Botox vs. Dysport, but wondering, “which is better,” today Valley Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center will be exploring these highly effective treatments.

If you’re ready to ease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with lasting results, Botox and Dysport are terrific options!

What Is Botox?

Botox, derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is a neurotoxin that is widely used in cosmetic procedures to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Its popularity stems from its effectiveness in temporarily relaxing facial muscles, leading to smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. Botox injections are minimally invasive and provide quick results, making them a preferred choice for individuals seeking non-surgical rejuvenation treatments.

Botox has a larger molecular size compared to Dysport, which can lead to less diffusion and make it better for more localized effects. Botox is FDA-approved and typically takes around 3-7 days to start showing visible results, with full effects appearing within 1-2 weeks.

What Is Dysport?

Dysport is an FDA-approved injectable treatment used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. It contains abobotulinumtoxinA, a neurotoxin derived from bacteria, that works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, ultimately reducing muscle activity and smoothing the appearance of wrinkles.

Dysport has a smaller molecular size than Botox. This can result in faster diffusion and wider spread in the treatment area, potentially allowing for more natural-looking results in larger areas. Some individuals may notice results as early as 2-3 days after treatment, with peak effects reached within a week.

Similarities Between These Injectables

When injected into specific facial muscles, both Botox and Dysport cause those muscles to relax, smoothing out wrinkles and reducing the appearance of fine lines.

Both are quick, easy and painless treatment options with results lasting for several months. These injectables can be used for wrinkles and fine lines in the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), around the lips, on the side of the nose, for marionette lines near the mouth and in the chin to correct dimpling.

Both injectables can also be safely used for the treatment of excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. They are injected into specific areas to block the signals that stimulate sweat glands.

Both Botox and Dysport contain botulinum toxin type A that is metabolized by the body through natural processes over time. The body breaks down the toxins into harmless byproducts that are eliminated from the body.

Differences Between Botox and Dysport

Botox and Dysport both contain botulinum toxin type A as their active ingredient, but they have some differences in formulation and properties that may make one better than the other for certain individuals:

  • Dysport contains abobotulinumtoxinA and has a smaller molecular size than Botox. This may result in faster diffusion and more coverage than Botox.
  • Botox and Dysport are not directly interchangeable in terms of dosage, as their potency and units differ.
  • The conversion ratio between the two products varies, meaning that the amount of Dysport needed to achieve the same effect as Botox may be different.
  • While both Botox and Dysport provide temporary improvement in wrinkles and lines, the duration of results can vary between individuals.
  • Botox may be preferred by some patients for treating dynamic wrinkles in areas requiring precise control like between the eyebrows or around the lips.
  • Dysport may be preferred by some patients for treating dynamic wrinkles in larger areas like the forehead or crow’s feet.
  • Some people may find that Dysport offers longer-lasting results compared to Botox, while others may prefer the longevity of Botox.

Ultimately, the choice between Botox and Dysport often depends on factors like individual preferences, treatment goals and treatment areas. Some people may prefer the potentially faster onset of Dysport or its broader spread for larger treatment areas, while others may stick with Botox due to its long-established track record and familiarity.

The Treatment Experience

At Valley Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, we will discuss your treatment goals and assess your facial anatomy to determine the appropriate injection sites. We will also recommend which injectable is most well-suited for your treatment area.

Prepping Skin

First, your target areas are cleansed with an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection. Some patients prefer numbing cream to dull the feeling of the injections.

Injection Sites

Both Botox and Dysport are injected directly into the targeted muscles using a very fine needle. Multiple injections may be needed depending on the treatment area.

How It Feels

Most patients describe the sensation as a minor discomfort or a slight pinching feeling. Some areas may be more sensitive than others, but the discomfort is usually brief.

Treatment Time

The entire procedure typically takes around 10-20 minutes, depending on the number of injection sites.

Recovery

After the injections, you may experience some redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these side effects are usually mild and temporary.
